Explosive and introspective, Kim McClay is a singer and songwriter who is not afraid to say it like it is. An artist who spent years cultivating her work in the live music scene of NYC, Kim is a gutsy lyricist and musician who skillfully blends indie, folk, and rock styles, pouring intimate, personal anecdotes into multi-textured layers of sound with each moment of her anticipated new EP, Worth It. Throughout the record, Kim channels her feminine rage, broken heart, and desperate message of hope into an exploration of the dynamics of today’s human connection- or lack thereof. Worth It is a commentary on the democratic system, the challenges of working together towards a common goal, and, most specifically, the complications of the female experience. “I wanted to pose questions about value,” Kim says. “What are we worth to each other? What do we owe our neighbors? Our family? Our friends? I wanted to touch on the importance of vulnerability- how valuable it is to turn into what’s uncomfortable and face it head-on.” Worth It is Kim’s first release since her popular single “Comin’ Home” came out in Sept. 2023 and marks a return to her songwriting roots. She wrote these songs on her acoustic guitar before bringing them to her long-time bandmates: Dustin Beardsley (electric guitar), Trevor Brown (bass), & Jim Bloom (drums), who each added their own flair to the EP’s foundation. With Kim & Dustin at the helm, the music evolved through a series of New York City shows, a festival debut, and several collaborative rehearsals before they decided to lay down the tracks at Dustin’s Brooklyn apartment: Rugby Road Studios. Woven into every song on Worth It are Kim’s strong convictions and vocal prowess, uniting the hard-hitting, illustrative lyrics with high-octane layers of gritty rock sounds, vibrant acoustic guitar, and resounding drums. The carefully curated set of songs leads you through moments of soft reflection and loud confidence; each track captures a different burst of emotional energy that inspires the hair on the back of your neck to leave your skin behind. Kim’s bold response to being a female in the music business kicks the album off strong. “Velveteen Girls” (inspired by The Velveteen Rabbit) is an anthem for all girls, at any age, to embrace themselves exactly as they are. “I want us to acknowledge what a privilege it is to age…to celebrate every wrinkle as it marks a life well-lived!” “Firefly” & “Worth It” are daring calls to action- challenging you to shine your light in the face of danger and demanding you look directly at your pain to address it and change your fate. Born out of political anxiety and inspired by real-life femme fatale fireflies, these songs are a reminder of the power of your voice and a summons to dig up your courage to fight for what you believe in. In the last two, more folk/rock-leaning tunes, “So Close” & “Something Like Love”, Kim touches on the riskiness of romantic love. “I had an experience where I was hung up on the same person for 2 years,” she says. “It felt like the whole world had moved on, but I stood still, waiting for my feelings to pass, and they never did.” Her more intimate storytelling shines through the end of the album as these songs expose Kim’s sentimental feelings and echoing resilience. Whether coming out of the gate swinging in “Velveteen Girls” or creeping in like a secret in “So Close,” Kim’s rich vocals marry the impassioned pleas with catchy pop melodies and danceable beats. Her voice carries an emotional torch that connects each moment of wildfire and candlelight, showing off a wide range of musical highs and lows.
